Custom theme from scratch

A theme that is yours, not a template with your logo

A theme built from the ground up carries only what your store needs: your sections, your settings, your speed. BREKKY has run on one since 2023, and every feature since then, from the bundle builder to the answer search, was added to that foundation instead of fought into a template.

What you get

  • Online Store 2.0 architecture: sections everywhere, JSON templates, no locked pages
  • Your design system in the theme settings: colours, type, spacing, radius
  • Plain web components for interaction, no framework in the storefront
  • Documented so the next developer, or you, can keep going

A custom theme and three apps around one breakfast brand

Three years on the same store, from the first section in 2023 to an AI answer search in 2026. The theme is built section by section, and the parts Shopify does not sell as an app are custom: a mix-and-match bundle with per-cell discounts on Shopify Functions, a search backend on a Cloudflare Worker, and the checkout extensions.

  • Mega Bundle: mix & match with per-cell discounts, a cart transform folds the set into one line
  • Answer search: the shopper asks a question, the store answers with products
  • Countdown, cross-selling, recipes and a variant picker built for the brand, not a template

173 features on one theme, kept editable in the admin

The longest-running theme in the list: 1,027 commits since 2023. Collection filters and sorting for desktop and mobile, a price range, a new search, a blog on the product page, a countdown bar, a login form. Every one of them is a section or block the team configures themselves.

  • Collection filtering and sorting built for both breakpoints separately
  • Product page with a blog, a countdown bar, small cards and text-with-video sections
  • Three years of refactoring so the theme stays fast while it grows

Questions

When is a custom theme worth it over Dawn?

When you keep fighting the template: the design does not fit its sections, every feature needs an app, or the page is slow because of what you do not use. If Dawn plus a few sections covers you, I will say so.
